Burkina Faso: two researchers create iCivil.

“Two engineers have announced today in Ouagadougou, the creation of an SMS-based registration solution called iCivil.  The system was created to fill the gaps of the civil registration procedure in Africa where over 50% of the population does not have a legal identity.  “iCivil is a modern technological system, it is revolutionary and adapted to the existing communication infrastructure”, explained Adama Sawadogo, the engineer who co-invented the solution with his French partner Francis Bourrières”

"The data of each newborn is sent via SMS by the nurse after having paired it with a unfalsifiable unique authentification number."

The SMS is immediately received on the local civil registration server. The SMS and authentication number are paired to create a birth certificate form that will be ready to print out by the civil servant. "

"When rolled out on a national scale, birth by birth, the national registration archive grows and the parents will no longer have to travel long distances to declare the birth of their children. They can collect the birth certificate at their convenience by presenting the bracelet that was given to their child the day they were born."

"My country is going to seize this opportunity to solve the problems related to the lack of identification of our population. In this particularly poor country, over 90% born in the countryside and 60% born in the cities do not get legally registered. "
